Original Complaint against American Campus Communities Inc published at Scamity.com on 30-Apr-15 says, verbatim –
University Village is a leasing company that provides apartments for college students. Unfortunately, they will say anything to get a lease signed. They will tell you that the apartment you are looking for, is the last one they have tavailable (yet days later others will be told there are plenty more available). | They indicate that completing an “application” that can be cancelled at anytime is the way to go if you don’t want to miss out. You agree to do this and suddenly they hand you a wad of papers, application paper on top but the rest is a lease, which is legally binding and not subject to any cancellation policies. They have students working in the office, at weekends completely unsupervised, so no one there to witness what is being said to potential clients. | They explain very little, if at all, leaving you in a back room alone to complete everything they have left you. Since you are not expecting this to be a disreputable organization, you don’t think they would be tricking you into signing additional papers you didn’t need to. You think it is all part of the procedure, since this employee told you this is what you need to fill out. | As soon as the paperwork has been signed under the given impression that it is all part of the application that can be cancelled, you are stuck in a legally binding contract they will never release you from. The only way to get out is to go out an find someone to take it off your hands (they do not help you with this), most often you have to drop the price dramatically in order to find anyone. | It’s a shameless organization that preys on college students in this way. They refuse to admit any wrongdoing or to cancel leases they have tricked people into.
